Mookini offers an exclusive line of sarongs that are “wearable works of art”, beautifully designed and using luxurious materials that sway with the motion of your body.
Whether you are looking for a sarong for your holiday getaway, or browsing sarongs for the indoor pool or spa this winter, look through our sarong online shop with our extensive range of hand painted sarongs and we are sure that our brightly coloured sarongs, with strong decorative motifs, will quickly become one of the most treasured items in your wardrobe.
The word “sarong” or “pareo” is the most common term used today and every sarong is a work of art, and deserves to be recognised as an original. Our sarongs are beautifully handcrafted pieces of cloth created using the ‘batik technique’, one of the oldest methods of decorating textiles, and absorbing the long history of batik that relates to the heritage and traditions that are honoured around Asia.
The special ‘canting’ tool is used to apply wax on the fabric to create outlines of batik motifs and the hand process of colouring application is used on all our sarongs. There are some occasions where we can see the batik with 5 or 6 different colours applied within one fabric and this method of creating batik is the most time consuming as well as valuable due to its difficulty.
The same fabric referred to as a “sarong” in Indonesia is also called a “pareo” in Tahiti, a “malo” in Tong, a “sulu” in Fiji, a “pakome” in Thailand, a “lava-lava” in Samoa, a “canga” in Brazil, and so forth.
Sarongs make ideal beachwear, cruisewear, beach wedding clothing, pool party wear as well as every day wear around the home and garden. Our sarongs can be worn in many ways and will add originality and artistic flair to your wardrobe and are a great accompaniment to any trip.
If you are looking for ways to tie a sarong, our page on “how to tie your sarong” features 20 styles and purchasing one of our handcrafted coconut shell sarong buckle accessories will ensure that your sarong is secure.
Whatever your culture, whatever your style, a sarong will come in handy in more ways than one! Part of the beauty of sarongs is their pure functionality and these special kinds of cloth have many secondary uses; they make colourful curtains, wall hangings, bed covers, sofa throws and pillow coverings. Their eventual use is limited only by the imagination.
